Nov 2014 | Debswana Diamond Company visits STRACON GyM

“Debswana Diamond Company", the world´s leading producer of diamonds located in Botswana – Africa, recently visited our El Brocal project, in order to learn about the "ASTiD Advisory System for Tired Drivers" program with the vision of applying this technology to their Orapa and Jwaneng mine sites.

ASTiD - assesses the level of tiredness in drivers while operating heavy equipment through an electronic and sensorial device capable of detecting the characteristics of the state of fatigue. The live information is transmitted via the 3G telecommunication system to a central monitoring control room which immediately alerts the mining operations team should there be a fatigue observation noted. This instant notification helps address the immediate situation and greatly reduces the likelihood of a fatigue related incident.

STRACON GyM is regarded as a world leader in managing operator fatigue. To achieve this goal, STRACON GyM is assisted by specialist companies such as WOMBATT, and Fatigue Management International Limited utilizing the ASTiD technology..

The program -in line with our “Grow and Share” sustainability model- promotes the development of a research culture in engineering in order to encourage innovation so the country's competitiveness can be improved. Also, it considers a comprehensive strategy that includes the organization between the State, the academy and the company, development of capacities and transmission of knowledge.

The initiatives included in the program are the following: the Graña y Montero Award for Research in Peruvian Engineering, the Engineering Portal (PI), Engineering Research and the “Structure your ideas” competition. Thanks to this innovative proposal, there are more members of the engineering community who are interested in research and have the capabilities to develop it.
